aromatherapy and essential oilsWhat is Aromatherapy?

The revival of the old art of therapeutic treatment using essential oils by way of massage, anointment and inhalation. More and more people are finding out about the benefits and enjoyment that is derived from Aromatherapy either professionally or in the home. It is certainly not something to be taken lightly, but great fun can be had blending massage mixes, foam baths, foot baths and from the discovery of the beneficial properties of essential oils in general.

Using Essential Oils

There are many ways of benefitting from essential oils.

  • Vaporization

Probably the most popular way in the home. Ideal for relaxing and relieving the pressures of the day or to create differing moods with the home. Use them to relax or as a room freshener, an aid to concentration or even in the sick room.

Use either a burner, light bulb ring, Aromastone or even a small bowl of water on a radiator.

  • In the bath

A great way to soothe away the stresses of the day or to revitalize you for that special occasion. Just add a few drops (5 or 6) to a teaspoon of carrier oil, drop into a full bath and mix. Then just lie back and bask in the bath enjoying the aroma and of course the therapeutic effects.

  • Massage

Sheer luxury. Put 4-6 drops of essential oil with 2 teaspoons of carrier oil (10ml) and blend well. The choice of oils is enormous and use one or a blend of two or more to suit your mood.

  • Foot Baths

Fantastic for aching feet and to cool you down. You really will be amazed how effective a few drops (about 6) in a bowl of water can be.

  • Room Spray

Marvellous to freshen a room. Put a few drops of essential oil in a plant sprayer, fill with water, shake energetically and spray. Avoid glass or polished surfaces.

  • Inhalation

Great for clearing the head. A couple of drops in a bowl of steaming water, cover your head with a towel, close your eyes and breathe in deeply. Do take extra care if you suffer from allergic reactions such as asthma or hay fever, as this method may not be suitable for you.

aromatherapy and essential oilsQuality & Safety

The following are a few notes on the safe use and benefits of essential oils. We would suggest you buy a book to gain a deeper knowledge of the use of essential oils.

The majority of oils are extracted by steam distillation from the flowers, leaves, wood, resin and sometimes the whole plant, whilst others, such as citrus oils, are cold pressed. Essential oils are incredibly concentrated as the percentage yield of each is tiny. For example, it takes the oil from approximately 15 oranges to fill one 10ml bottle or 4 fully-grown rosemary bushes and how many rose petals? Probably millions – this explains why essential oils are so expensive.

Beware of cheap oils!

At New Seasons we only sell pure and natural essential oils. We are extremely careful about selection and import many oils direct from producers from all over the globe. Those sourced locally come from the most discerning of importers and undergo extensive laboratory testing.

Owing to their concentration, essential oils should always be diluted before applying to the skin. Keep out of reach of children, away from the eyes and do not take internally.

  • Pregnancy

Aromatherapy can be a great bonus during pregnancy and many women find it extremely pleasing and beneficial. However many oils should be avoided whilst pregnant particularly in the first three months. It is always best to seek professional advice before use or at the very least check with a reference book.

  • Epilepsy

Avoid Eucalyptus & Rosemary

  • Babies and Children

It is best to seek professional advice and always use at a reduced strength. Avoid Eucalyptus and Peppermint.

  • High Blood Pressure

Do not use Rosemary

  • Sensitive Skin

Always try a small skin test first. Use oils at quarter strength, gradually increasing to full strength if no reaction occurs.

  • Sunshine

Avoid all citrus oils, particularly Bergamot, before going into sunlight or onto a sun bed.

  • Homeopathy

If using homeopathic remedies some essential oils will nullify their effect.
